Waves Trapped by Submerged Obstacles at High Frequencies

چکیده
As is well known, submerged horizontal cylinders can serve as waveguides for surface water waves. For large values of the wavenumber k in the direction of the cylinders, there is only one trapped wave. We construct asymptotics of these trapped modes and their frequencies as k→∞ in the case of one or two submerged cylinders by means of reducing the initial problem to a system of integral equations on the boundaries and then solving them using a technique suggested by Zhevandrov and Merzon (2003).

Trapped modes in a two-layer fluid
Abstract Trapped-mode frequencies are computed for submerged, horizontal, circular cylinders in a two-layer fluid consisting of a finite layer bounded above by a free surface and below by a infinite layer of greater density. Two separate cases are considered. First we consider waves which propagate along the top of a single cylinder at frequencies below the cut-off for wave propagation away fro...
متن کاملOn the non-existence of surface waves trapped by submerged obstructions having exterior cusp points
Trapped modes, i.e. localized unforced oscillations of fluid in presence of floating structures and bottom topography, have been a topic of considerable interest over many years and substantial effort has been put, for a variety of different geometries, into finding the solutions and conditions of their existence or non-existence. However, the class of geometries having cusp points has been avo...
متن کاملTrapping of waves by a submerged elliptical torus
In linear water-wave theory a trapped mode is defined to be a non-zero solution of the homogeneous equations and boundary conditions, which doesn’t radiate waves and has finite energy. The existence of such modes supported by three-dimensional, surface-piercing bodies in the open sea was first established by McIver & McIver[1]. They constructed an axisymmetric potential and defined the shape of...
متن کاملTrapped modes supported by submerged obstacles
In this paper trapped modes are shown to exist for a pair of bodies which are submerged in deep water. An inverse procedure is used whereby a flow which represents a local oscillation is constructed and closed streamlines which surround the singularities of the flow are interpreted as body boundaries. The velocity potential for the flow is constructed from a symmetric combination of horizontal ...
متن کاملOn frequency bounds for modes trapped near a channel-spanning cylinder
A channel of infinite length and depth and of constant width contains inviscid heavy fluid having free surface. The fluid is bounded internally by a submerged cylinder which spans the channel and has its generators normal to the sidewalls. The existence of trapped modes, i.e. states with finite energy corresponding to localized fluid oscillations, is well established in the linearised theory of...
